NOTICE CP503

CP Notices
The IRS CP503 notice is a standard yet urgent request sent to taxpayers to alert them of their unpaid taxes. It indicates that previous notifications have been sent (CP501 and CP502), and the amount due on your account remains unsettled. The notice serves as a reminder to clear the outstanding debt, detailing how much you owe, including any penalties or interest accrued due to late payment.

Reasons why it happened:

  • You did not file your tax return on time.
  • You filed your tax return but did not pay the balance due by the due date.
  • You made a payment on your tax return but it was not enough to cover the full balance due.
  • You made a payment on your tax return but it was late.
  • You have a penalty or interest charge on your tax account.
Options for responding:
  • Read the notice carefully. It will explain how much you owe, when your payment is due, and your payment options.
  • Pay the amount you owe by the due date shown on the notice.
  • Make a payment plan if you can’t pay the full amount you owe. Contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to set up a payment plan.
  • Contact the IRS if you disagree with the amount you owe or if you have any questions about the notice.
