LETTER 3179C

CP Notices

IRS Letter 3179C is a notice from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that informs you that they have offset your tax refund to pay a non-tax debt. This means that the IRS has taken some or all of your refund to pay off a debt that you owe to another government agency, such as the Department of Education (student loans) or the Department of Health and Human Services (child support).

Reasons why it happened:

There are a few reasons why you might receive IRS Letter 3179C:

  • You owe a non-tax debt that is eligible for offset.
  • You have not made payments on your non-tax debt in a timely manner.
  • The IRS has received a notice from the other government agency that you owe a debt.
  • You have not filed a Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation, to claim your portion of a joint tax refund if your spouse owes a non-tax debt.
Options for responding:

If you receive IRS Letter 3179C, you should carefully review the letter to understand why your refund was offset. If you agree with the offset, there is no need to take any further action. However, if you have any questions or concerns, you should contact the IRS or the other government agency that you owe the debt to.

Here are some additional things you can do if you receive IRS Letter 3179C:

  • Review your account transcript. You can order your account transcript from the IRS website. This will show you all of the transactions that have been posted to your account, including the offset of your refund.
  • Contact the other government agency. If you have any questions about your debt, such as the amount you owe or the payment options available to you, you should contact the other government agency directly.
  • File a Form 8379. If you are married and your spouse owes a non-tax debt, you may be able to claim your portion of a joint tax refund by filing Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation.
