Letter 672C is an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) notice that informs you that the IRS has located and/or applied your payment. You may receive this notice if you:

  • Made a payment to the IRS and did not specify where you wanted it applied.
  • Requested that the IRS move your payment to another tax account or tax period.
  • Made a payment after receiving a notice from the IRS that your account was delinquent.

You received Letter 672C because the IRS has located and/or applied a payment that you made to them. There are a few reasons why you may have received this letter, including:

  • You made a payment to the IRS and did not specify where you wanted it applied. The IRS will apply your payment to the oldest balance due first.
  • You requested that the IRS move your payment to another tax account or tax period. The IRS will move your payment as requested, but you may receive a notice if the payment is not enough to cover the balance due on the new account or period.
  • You made a payment after receiving a notice from the IRS that your account was delinquent. The IRS will apply your payment to the delinquent account first.
Options for responding:
