NOTICE CP19

CP Notices

Notice CP19 is a notice that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) sends to taxpayers when they have made changes to the taxpayer’s tax return. These changes are usually made because the IRS believes that the taxpayer claimed one or more deductions or credits that they should not have. As a result, the IRS has increased the amount of tax that the taxpayer owes.

    Reasons why it happened:

There are a few reasons why you might receive Notice CP19:

  • You made a mistake on your tax return, either intentionally or unintentionally.
  • The IRS has new information about your income or deductions that was not available when you filed your tax return.
  • The IRS is conducting an audit of your tax return.
  • The IRS is investigating you for tax fraud or other tax-related crimes.
Options for responding:

If you receive Notice CP19, the first thing you should do is review the notice carefully to understand the changes that the IRS has made to your tax return. If you agree with the changes, you can simply pay the additional tax that you owe. However, if you disagree with the changes, you have the right to dispute them with the IRS.

To dispute the changes, you will need to complete and return the response form that is included with the notice. You should also attach any documentation that supports your position. If you do not agree with the IRS’s decision after you have disputed the changes, you can request a meeting with an IRS appeals officer.
