NOTICE CP2057

CP Notices

IRS Notice CP2057 is a notice that the IRS sends to taxpayers when there is a difference between the income reported on their tax return and the income reported to the IRS by employers, banks, and other payers. The IRS wants you to review your records to make sure you have not underreported your income on your tax return.

    Reasons why it happened:
  • You forgot to report income, such as interest income from a savings account or dividend income from stocks.
  • Your employer or other payer made a mistake on the information they reported to the IRS.
  • You are the victim of identity theft and someone else is using your Social Security number to file tax returns.
Options for responding:
  1. Review the notice carefully to understand what income the IRS received about you from others and how it is different from the income you reported on your tax return.
  2. If you agree with the information reported by other sources, you will need to file an amended tax return (Form 1040X) to correct your original return.
  3. If you do not agree with the information reported by other sources, you can contact the sources directly to ask them to correct their records.
  4. Once you have corrected the error, you should send the IRS a copy of your amended tax return or documentation showing that the other sources have corrected their records.
