NOTICE CP71

CP Notices

An IRS CP71 Notice is a reminder from the IRS that you have an unpaid tax balance. Your account may be in deferred status, which means that the IRS is not currently collecting on your debt, but you still owe the money.

The CP71 Notice will show you the total amount you owe, including interest and penalties. It will also give you a date by which you need to pay the debt in full to avoid additional penalties and interest.

Reasons why it happened:

  • You filed your tax return on time but did not pay the taxes you owed.
  • You filed your tax return late and did not pay the taxes you owed.
  • You did not file a tax return.
  • You made a mistake on your tax return that resulted in an underpayment of taxes.

Options for responding:

  • If you receive an IRS CP71 Notice, it is important to read it carefully. The notice will explain your options for paying your debt.
  • If you can pay your debt in full by the due date, you should do so. You can pay online, by mail, or by phone.
  • If you cannot pay your debt in full by the due date, you can contact the IRS to set up a payment plan. The IRS will work with you to create a plan that fits your budget.
  • If you believe that you received the CP71 Notice in error, you can contact the IRS to dispute the debt. You will need to provide documentation to support your claim.
