NOTICE CP87A

CP Notices

IRS Notice CP87A is a letter sent by the IRS to taxpayers who have claimed a dependent or qualifying child on their tax return with the same Social Security number (SSN) as a dependent or qualifying child claimed on another taxpayer’s return. If you receive IRS Notice CP87A, it means that the IRS needs to verify that the person you claimed as a dependent actually qualifies as your dependent. The IRS will need to determine who is entitled to claim the dependent for tax purposes.

Reasons why it happened:
  • You and another taxpayer are claiming the same dependent.
  • You claimed a dependent who is not eligible to be claimed as a dependent.
  • You made an error on your tax return, such as entering the wrong SSN for your dependent.
    What to do:
  • Completing and mailing the enclosed Form 8832, Entity Classification Election, to the IRS
  • Providing the IRS with documentation that proves your relationship to the dependent
  • Contacting the IRS to discuss your situation

What happens if I do not respond:

If you do not respond to IRS Notice CP87A, the IRS may disallow your claim for the dependent. This could result in you having to pay additional taxes, interest, and penalties.

How to avoid it in the future:
  • Make sure that you are entitled to claim the dependent you are claiming.
  • Double-check the SSNs you enter on your tax return.
  • Communicate with any other taxpayers who may be claiming the same dependent.
